There are many things that can run through someone’s mind when they hurt their back at home or in the gym. Did something serious happen? What should I do next? Will it ever get better?
Back pain is a common injury that many humans will experience over the course of their lives. Most of the time a back injury will improve with time but for some the pain can linger longer than we would like. If you feel something serious has happened, making an appointment with your local doctor, physical therapist, or healthcare provider is a good place to start, as they can guide you on the next steps to take.
It is often thought that low back pain is due to poor core strength. While strengthening the core is a good starting place for rehabbing your back, the long term success in staying out of pain is seen with strengthening the hips and the lower back muscles. Think about it, if you were to strain your hamstring, over time you would gradually increase the strength of your hamstrings to get back to normal. So, why would you not apply the same approach after a low back strain?
Below you will find a few of my favorite exercises to help strengthen your lower back and keep you out of pain!
